EXHIBITION VISUAL

Within the limits of reality, photography reveals the infinite potential of the image.
Taiwanese visual artist Yu-Hsu Chou approaches photography not simply as a means of documenting the world, but as a way of transforming how the visible world is perceived. Drawing from mythology, allegory, and conceptual photography, his images move between reality and imagination, familiarity and estrangement, and the visible and unseen.
Finite Matter, Infinite Image brings together four interconnected bodies of work. In The 7th Universe, fragments of the Earth are reframed as distant planets and cosmic terrains. Signals transforms electronic interference and digital glitches into an autonomous visual language. The Last Landscape imagines a post-human future in which traces of civilization are gradually reclaimed by nature. Dark Matter moves further from direct representation, using flowing light and unstable forms to consider what may exist beyond immediate visibility.
In dialogue with Thomas Ruff's examination of photographic truth and Hiroshi Sugimoto's meditations on time and perception, Chou considers photography as a medium capable not only of recording reality, but of reorganizing our relationship with it.
As digital technologies and artificial intelligence increasingly blur the boundary between reality and fabrication, Finite Matter, Infinite Image asks what photography can still offer when the image can no longer be understood simply as evidence of the real.
Within finite reality, the image remains open to infinite possibilities.

EXHIBITION VISUAL

Post-Viewing examines how digital signals can move beyond their function as carriers of information and become visual material in their own right.
Focusing on Yu-Hsu Chou's Signals series, the exhibition explores moments when digital information is disrupted, transformed, and translated into unexpected images. What normally remains invisible within the operation of a screen becomes visible through interference, fragmentation, and photographic capture.
The exhibition considers these images not simply as technological errors, but as another condition of seeing—one in which the boundaries between the physical and the digital, the real and the virtual, become increasingly uncertain.
Through this process, Post-Viewing asks how photography might respond to a world in which images are no longer defined solely by what exists before the camera.

INSTALLATION VIEWS

XIV FLORENCE BIENNALE
Fortezza da Basso, Florence, Italy
2023
Presented at the XIV Florence Biennale in 2023, Essere examines the instability of self-image and personal identity through layered projections of the artist's own shadow.
The work received the Special Commendation from the President (Photography).

ESSERE

Essere was created through overlapping projections of my own shadow, producing multiple figures that appear both familiar and unfamiliar.
These layered selves led me to question how identity changes through time and lived experience. Rather than treating the self as fixed, the work considers identity as something continually formed, lost, remembered, and rediscovered.
Is that still me?
